Suggestions/Ideas For Trading Post Pets

The suggestion to include no-longer-available and past promotional pets to the Trading Post isn't a new one. I think lots of people have floated the idea around.

This is just a full list of possible pets that fall under the aforementioned categories, for reference and easy viewing. I recognize that some battle pets on this list are probably completely off limits and would never be considered by Blizzard for the Trading Post (for various reasons), but I've included them anyway for completion.

So here are all no-longer-available and/or past promotional pets that players would probably like to see in a future Trading Post rotation. Let me know if I've missed any.

Patch 9.1 PTR - Junk Items Shopping List

There are 3 pets coming in Patch 9.1 that won't cost gold or Polished Pet Charms (although there is a 4th pet that *will* cost 10k PPC), but instead junk items. Each pet will require 3 old world grey items (1 of each item). Think of it as a sort of scavenger hunt. It's a unique and refreshing mechanic vs. the usual spend gold/charms for vendor pets.

Since they're vendor trash, finding these items should be a no-brainer, right? Sure, except the revamped world-scaling kind of messed up certain loot tables, and players that aren't level appropriate for these old world greys won't see them drop in most cases. So it's a bit of a puzzle/search.

After some testing on *live* servers, I've determined where to find each of the junk items. All the items were collected on a max level character, except for one. I also needed a rogue to pickpocket mobs. There are probably other ways of collecting these items, but this is what I found worked for me.

I make no guarantee that the loot tables and droprates will stay the same between now and 9.1 release. Blizzard might adjust anything that they see fit.

Hidden behind the jump break, just in case you don't want spoilers and want to figure it out on your own. ;)

N'Zoth Assaults - How Many Attempts Per Year?

I was curious how many chances we get at the drops from the 8.3 N'Zoth Invasion content per year, so I created a Google Calendar thing to figure out some estimates. Here are the results.

With the Black Empire Uldum assault starting on the first Tuesday of the year (NA region), and if using only 1 toon:

► Approx. 182 attempts for K'uddly & Corrupted Tentacle

► Approx. 183 days for Wicked Lurker
Can't really figure out how many attempts since it's random whether or not the rare that drops this pet will spawn.
► Approx. 104 OR 105 attempts for Rotbreath & Aqir Tunneler
The number varies slightly because it depends on which Minor Uldum assault starts at the beginning of every other week (Aqir or Amathet). For this year (2020 and includes first few days of 2021) it's roughly 104 attempts.

I'm not listing the Minor Vale assaults since there aren't any pets that drop from those, but if you're curious about other drops from those two events, it's about the same as the Minor Uldum assaults listed above.

For me, this puts a year into some perspective. It may feel long sometimes, but there aren't actually that many days. Life is short. We're prisoners of our own time/making. Existential crisis, yikes?

Anyway, with a low drop rate and only so many chances per year it's no wonder that a pet collector's only options are to either use A LOT of alts for additional attempts per day, or buy/trade the pets. A third option is to just keep playing for however long it takes to see the pet drop. I'm not a statistics major so I can't calculate how long, but Wowhead currently lists the drop rates as follows.

  • K'uddly - 2.1% chance
  • Corrupted Tentacle - 2.38% chance
  • Wicked Lurker - 1.98% chance
  • Rotbreath - 2.76% chance
  • Aqir Tunneler - 0.97% chance

RNG is RNG though. I received the Wicked Lurker before the Corrupted Tentacle, despite the latter having a higher estimated drop rate. Experiences will vary, of course.

I don't know how I feel about this information. It's kind of grim, to be honest. I'm fortunate that I have time to get multiple alts attempting for the pets, plus my OH who is also able and willing to try for me. But for someone that doesn't have the time and can only use 1 toon... oof. I feel for them. This 8.3 experience is probably not very fun if all they're doing it for is the pets.

At the moment it almost feels as if it's designed with players like myself in mind - those with lots of alts to use. I mean, that's how you fight RNG, right? Just roll the dice more and more? But how do you keep players playing if their army of alts makes (relatively) quick work of the RNG? Just make the events limited on top of the already low drop rate (and random spawn in the case of Wicked Lurker's rare). In other words layered RNG.

I wish there was a better implementation of this type of content. There has to be a compromise somewhere so that both designers and players are content with the results. It feels unnecessarily unfair.

Patch 8.3 - Invasion Rares For Pets

Update: Added info on the Amalgamation of Flesh and Wicked Lurker drop. Thanks to @WayneGWoods for the heads up!

--------------------------

Notes for myself to keep track of which rares are important in Patch 8.3. See below for approximate locations of rare mobs that spawn during specific invasions and have a chance to drop a battle pet.

There are 3 separate invasions for each zone (only one up for each zone at a time). I'm not 100% sure that the listed invasion *must* be active for these rares to spawn, but it would only make sense.

Vale of Eternal Blossoms, during a Black Empire invasion
1 = The Forgotten (drops K'uddly)
2 = Will of N'Zoth (drops Corrupted Tentacle)
Amalgamation of Flesh - unknown location, spawns during Black Empire invasion (drops Wicked Lurker)

Uldum, during an Aqir invasion
1 = Lord Aj'qirai (drops Rotbreath)
2 = Skikx'traz (drops Aqir Tunneler)

Not pictured: Uldum, during a Black Empire invasion
Amalgamation of Flesh - spawns during Black Empire Uldum invasion, requires the Pyre of the Amalgamated One bonus objective to be active for the rare to spawn (drops Wicked Lurker)

Revamped Recruit-A-Friend Guide (Patch 8.2.5+)

UPDATED MARCH 2023 - Everything still applies, but Rikki's been retired and a new battle pet (Volatile Self-Driving Toolbox) is now the new RAF pet. Additionally, game time can only be purchased 2 months at a time, making this method pricier than it was previously.

---------------

Blizzard recently relaunched an updated Recruit-A-Friend program. Sadly, previous rewards are no longer available, however there is a new reward that might interest pet collectors: Rikki!

Here is the process on how to recruit yourself to earn this pet.

It costs approximately $30.00 (cost of two months game time), or $15.00 (only with subscription), to collect the pet from the updated RAF system.

1. Log into the game, open your Social window.
2. Select the Recruit A Friend tab, and hit the recruitment button (lower left of the window).
3. A new window will pop up where you can generate a recruitment link.
Note: Link does not expire until a custom date noted underneath the link field. Each link can be used 4 times.
4. Copy and email this link to yourself.
Note: You can use the same email address that's already attached to your main account.
5. Clicking the link will take you to a page to either select one of your existing eligible accounts to "recruit", or Create New Game Account.
Note: Alt-accounts that are eligible for "recruitment" are accounts that are inactive and you haven't used in a long time (at least 2-3 years). You'll get a list of possible accounts to select or the option to make a new one.
6. After selecting either option, go to the Blizzard Shop and purchase game time.
Note: Blizzard no longer offers one month game time, and the only option for game time is two months which is $30 USD. You can still purchase a subscription, which is $15 USD for one month. However, you'll need to remember to turn off the subscription if you're only aiming for the pet. There might be delays in rewards as well if using a subscription, as the program only counts game time applied.
7. Apply it to your account (WoW1, WoW2, etc.) that you just "recruited".
Note: To make sure the game time is applied, you can check by either going to your Bnet launcher and viewing the recruited account (WoW1, WoW2, etc.). A timer should be displayed next to the Play button if that account has game time on it. Alternatively, you can go to Account Management online, select Game & Subscriptions, and see if the RAF'ed account is listed as "Active Account Status".
8. Log back onto your main account and Rikki should be waiting for you to claim in the Recruit A Friend tab of the Social window!

You should be able to claim Rikki immediately once eligible and he will be added directly to your Pet Journal. He's rare quality and S/B breed.

Side Note: Although Rikki was an instantaneous reward, there are reports that the additional RAF rewards aren't.

It seems that rewards are awarded monthly, so reward #2 is not redeemable until one month is up for the RAF account and the second month kicks in, and so on. The original RAF program had a similar issue, but much like the original RAF system, there's a possible work around. See this Twitter thread to learn more.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried getting the other rewards, so I can't say for sure how it works. Just be aware the other rewards may not be redeemable right away.

You can learn more about how recruiting multiple people/accounts works on the official Recruit-A-Friend page.

That's about it! It's unknown if the older rewards will come back, or if other new pets will be added. We'll have to wait and see.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any additional questions, corrections, or comments. Happy collecting :)

In addition to the 8.2 wild pets coming in multiple colors, many of the non-wild pets also have a number of skins.

Giving Up On A Goal

After much consideration, I think I've finally decided to not actively seek out battle pets that have multiple skins that are not wild.

This decision doesn't come easily; the collector and semi-completionist in me is cringing and not happy. I do enjoy the different appearances, but I don't think I can stomach the difficulties of trying to obtain non-wild pets of different colors anymore.

I've already written a lengthy feedback post on the official Bnet Pet Battle forums, detailing why it feels horrible as a collector faced with collecting non-wild pets with multiple skins. On top of the RNG involved and lack of (good) in-game preview tools of caged battle pets for sale, there's also a notable lack of player agency involved.

Let's compare examples of a pet that has player agency vs. one that has little to none. OOX-35/MG is an 8.2 pet that can only drop on days that a daily is active on Mechagon. Meanwhile, Glittering Diamondshell is an 8.2 pet that drops from a rarespawn on Nazjatar. The former can come in 4 different colors, and the latter has 5 skins.

I already have all versions of OOX-35/MG - why? Player agency. The only RNG I had to contend with was the randomness associated with which skin I received after adding the pet to my Pet Journal. I was largely in control of the whole process of collecting this pet. (It could be argued that there's also RNG regarding when the daily will pop up, but I see that as an 'eventuality' rather than completely random.) I did not mind collecting this pet and its multiple colors. It took time, but it didn't feel bad.

The Glittering Diamondshell, on the other hand, drops off a rarespawn that can appear in multiple locations. That's RNG #1; just finding the mob. It's respawn timer, if it's like any of the other 8.2 rares, is between 1 and 1.5 hours. RNG #2; period of time that's somewhat, but not entirely predictable. The battle pet that drops is not guaranteed. RNG #3; purely chance to receive the pet. And last but not least, the skin that you learn is random. RNG #4; no control over whether or not you receive a duplicate color or one that you need/want. All four factors combined makes for a very, very frustrating and discouraging experience. If you take into consideration breed (many dropped pets come in a variety of breeds as well), it's even more demoralizing.

To spare myself the heartache and disappointment, I've decided not to concern myself with dropped pet colors anymore. I could buy them from the AH, but as I explained in my long Bnet post, it's difficult to preview caged pets since the in-game tool currently only shows the default color.

It's tough for me to let go of something that I've been so consistent with throughout my WoW career - collecting all battle pet skins. But without player agency or the tools necessary to collect efficiently, I just can't swallow all of the layered RNG. I'm throwing in the towel. Giving up. The RNG and lack of player agency killed my drive to continue. So I'm done with that goal/challenge. Collect one of whatever pet it is, and then move on.

In my post that I linked above, I offer up some suggestions. Non-wild pets as color-changers, better in-game preview tool, or implementing different skins as separate pets altogether. I don't know how reasonable or practical any of my ideas are, but they're better than the current state of things (IMO).

On the bright side, I will continue to hunt for wild pets that have multiple colors. The RNG is still there, yes, but unlike dropped pets, I have more control over what, when, how, where I battle and search for wild pets. Randomness isn't overwhelming and I can actually feel like I'm making progress.

As I've mentioned before, the carrot at the end of the stick can only be enticing if you can actually see it.

Save the Dates - Patch 8.2 Raiding/Dungeon Schedule

Patch 8.2 brings a new raid (The Eternal Palace) and a megadungeon (Operation: Mechagon).
  • 7 new pets will be from the raid (3 wild, 4 drops, all difficulties)
  • 6 new pets will be from the 5-player dungeon (4 wild, 2 drops, dungeon is Mythic-only)

Both of these zones will not be open at the start of Patch 8.2.
Official schedule announcement here

Here's the release schedule for battle pet collectors:

JULY 9, 2019
The Eternal Palace (Normal and Heroic)
Operation: Mechagon (Mythic-only dungeon)

JULY 16, 2019
The Eternal Palace (LFR Wing 1)
- Mindlost Bloodfrenzy (Blackwater Behemoth)

- Blackchasm Crawler, wild and found on the watery platforms in Halls of the Chosen, before the Lady Ashvane encounter

- Chitterspine Deepstalker, wild and found in the tunnel that leads to Lady Ashvane's area, after the Blackwater Behemoth encounter

- Trench Slug, wild and found as secondaries

JULY 30, 2019
The Eternal Palace (LFR Wing 2)
- Lightless Ambusher (Lady Ashvane)

AUGUST 13, 2019
The Eternal Palace (LFR Wing 3)
- Nameless Octopode (Za'qul)
- Zanj'ir Poker (Queen Azshara)

It's currently unclear where we'll find the wild pets within The Eternal Palace raid, or how we'll gain access to them.
  • Will they be similar to the Dream Whelpling from the Emerald Nightmare raid (need to defeat a specific encounter before they spawn)?
  • Or will they just be spawned in various locations, similar to Operation: Mechagon?
  • Will they only be near certain bosses, meaning those doing LFR will need to do a specific wing for a specific wild pet?
  • Will they even appear in LFR as well as other difficulties?

I'll update this page once more is revealed about these pets.

8.2 PTR - Nazjatar Slimy Pets Process

Thanks to the efforts of @patf0rd on Twitter, we now know how we'll be collecting "slimy" pets in Patch 8.2.

Players will likely need to progress in the zone a little bit before being able to see lootable crystals around the area. Possible prerequisites: pick up and complete the one-time quest in front of a Ravenous Slime, and unlock World Quests in the zone.

1. Collect Prismatic Crystals (lootable objects lying on the ground on Nazjatar, usually near water/waterfalls, possible prerequisites prior to seeing these objects)
2. Use a crystal to charm a Nazjatar critter
3. "Feed" a Ravenous Slime (total of 4 different slimes) with the charmed critter (slime will 'fall asleep' and despawn after feeding)
4. Repeat for a few days with each slime and eventually the slimes will spawn as cocoons instead of 'falling asleep', with a lootable "slimy" pet inside

Here's a map of where the Ravenous Slimes are located, plus coordinates (thanks @patf0rd!):

/way 32.8 39.7 Slime 151875
/way 45.7 24.1 Slime 151874
/way 71.8 25.6 Slime 151782
/way 54.9 48.6 Slime 151218

As noted above, the crystals tend to spawn near waterfalls. It takes a while for them to respawn, but they do pop back up in what seems to be set locations. Check back every now and then for additional crystals.

Looting the cocoon drops a random "slimy" pet, and you can get duplicates. So it looks like we'll have to repeat this process many times to collect all 7.

Each slime that turns into a cocoon will not respawn the next day, and will instead reset the following week. So it's essentially a "weekly".

Further testing by @patf0rd revealed that feeding the slimes is character-specific and not account-wide. So I guess you could bring alts to Nazjatar to find/loot crystals for the process. This might give collectors more chances for the "slimy" pets that they need/want.

8.2 PTR - Wild Pet Colors of Mechagon & Nazjatar

Many of the upcoming wild pets on Mechagon and Nazjatar come in multiple skins. Here's a visual guide and some notes on these pets.

Most are unique colors and I haven't found any other pets that have the same model+color to stand-in for these wild pets. Other pets that I haven't yet collected on the PTR could be used as substitutes if they come in multiple skins, but we won't know for sure until 8.2 is released.

Image heavy after the page break!

Patch 8.2 PTR - Battle Pet Content in Mechagon and Nazjatar

In an effort to keep track of the upcoming Pet Battle content, here's an overview of each new zone. It's not complete or super detailed; I'm still trying to figure out how some of the mechanics work. Will continue to update this list as I discover more.

Nearly all wild pets come in multiple colors. I'll have a separate post on the Mechagon and Nazjatar wild pet skins.

For 8.2 wild pet collecting, I highly recommend creating and using /tar macros for the difficult-to-find pets. Or wait for flying. But that's awkward, as you'll likely be done with nearly all of the Mechagon and Nazjatar achievements (most are part of the meta-achievement, Team Aquashock, which rewards a new pet) long before flying is unlocked.

MECHAGON

Mighty Minions of Mechagon
Straight forward achievement. Defeat 8 Legendary lvl 25 NPC pets. They should be available to battle at any time, and I don't think there are any that are gated behind phasing or other content (correct me if I'm wrong).

Another reason you'll want to defeat these Legendary battles - after defeating each one the for the first time, you get a one-time quest that rewards a nice chunk of reputation.
Mecha-Safari
Fairly straight forward collecting achievement (12 wild pets), however there are a few pets that will be troublesome to collect (listed below).
  • Experimental Roach - Pretty difficult to find relative to all of the other wild pets found on the island. Guessing it's either a 'only 1 up at a time' type of spawn, or it shares spawn points with its much, much more common cousin, Junkheap Roach.
  • Duskytooth Snooter - Same as above. Normally only found in the "green" areas on the island.
  • Rustbolt Clucker - This pet not spawning was confirmed a bug. It is now spawning, hopefully as intended.
  • Specimen 97 - Only spawns in a small location that's often a daily quest area, so player attack spells and AOE have a high chance of clipping and killing this wild pet. There's also only one of these pets up at any given time, but thankfully its respawn timer is quick.
  • Yellow Junkhopper - Very difficult to find as spawn locations are limited (only near habitable water). This leaves the pond in the northwest, smaller ponds in the trogg area, and some parts of the coastline (that aren't cliffs/hills). Guessing it's either a 'only 1 up at a time' type of spawn, or it shares spawn points with its much, much more common cousin, Fleeting Frog.
Notes: Some of these might be found inside the instance as well. Most appear to simply be very rare spawns, similar to the Stormstruck Beaver in Stormheim - shares a spawn with other wild pets, and isn't a common spawn.

Misc Mechagon pet collecting
Most non-wild pets will drop from rares, not a 100% guaranteed. Certain pets will be gated either behind time, daily quests, reputation, items, etc. Here's a list of the pet-related rare spawns that have a unique or special spawn mechanic.
For a full list of Mechagon pet-related rares, see the map image above. #4 & 5 are dependent on what daily/event is up, and is to mark the general area where the rare can pop up.

---------------------------------

NAZJATAR

Nautical Nuisances of Nazjatar
Similar to the Mechagon achievement. Defeat 12 Legendary lvl 25 NPC pets, should be available to battle at any time. Some are in difficult to reach areas. I don't think there are any that are gated behind phasing or other content (correct me if I'm wrong).

Another reason you'll want to defeat these Legendary battles - after defeating each one the for the first time, you get a one-time quest that rewards a nice chunk of reputation.
Nazjatari Safari
Collecting achievement that requires capturing 11 wild pets. Most can be found as secondaries, but a few are harder to find (listed below). Not aware of any prerequisites or phasing with any of these wild pets.
  • Bloodseeker - I only found these as primaries in/near rivers around the middle of Nazjatar (Dragon's Teeth Basin & The Royal Approach). Only spawns 1 at a time? Or very few/limited spawns?
  • Hissing Chitterspine - Only found inside the Chitterspine Grotto (cave entrance is near Gate of the Queen area, right next to Shadowspike Lurker). Tunnels are full of patting crabs, stealthed mobs, and elites. Very difficult to navigate safely, and there's only one Hissing Chitterspine spawn inside (but it has a very fast respawn time). If you get a lot of "Pet Battle area obstructed" errors, just kill the battle pet and hopefully a new one will quickly spawn in a better area.
  • Sandclaw Sunshell - Found on the far eastern side of the zone, Kal'methir, The Drowned Market, and Zin-Azshari. Only saw one up, so might only be one spawn at a time, or very limited.
From The Belly Of The Jelly
Thanks to the efforts of @patf0rd on Twitter, we now know how we'll be collecting "slimy" pets in Patch 8.2.

1. Collect Prismatic Crystals (lootable objects lying on the ground on Nazjatar, usually near water/waterfalls, possible prerequisites prior to seeing these objects)
2. Use a crystal to charm a Nazjatar critter
3. "Feed" a Ravenous Slime (total of 4 different slimes) with the charmed critter
4. Repeat for a few days with each slime and eventually the slimes will spawn as cocoons with a lootable "slimy" pet inside

See this post for additional details on the slimy pets process.
Nazjatar vendor pets
  • Prismatic Manapearls are the main currency of the zone. Earned doing dailies, looting treasures, etc. Need 190 for both pets.
  • Nazjatar Battle Commendations are earned from PVP activities in Nazjatar. Battle for Nazjatar event, PVP War Supply Chests, etc. Need 30 for the one pet.
Misc Nazjatar pet collecting
Many battle pets drop from rares which are likely gated behind certain content/phasing. Not 100% guaranteed? Check out this achievement to see all Nazjatar rares or this map of all rare locations. Unsure if some have unique spawn mechanics or not.

How to Prepare For Patch 8.1 Pet Collecting

Things to do to prep for 8.1 (coming week of December 11):

  • lvl a toon with Engineering skill of at least 125 (new crafted pet)
  • grind to Exalted on a toon (or all toons?) for Proudmoore Admiralty (A), Order of Embers (A), Talanji's Expedition (H), and Storm's Wake (A) reputations (paragon cache dropped pets)
  • save all/any reputation-granting items/quests for the reputations listed above
  • save up at least 500 dubloons (2 new known vendor pets + 1 new pet toy)

Things to do to prep for post-8.1 content:

  • lvl a toon to 120 + Enchanting skill of at least 125 (new crafted pet, recipe drops off of King Rastakhan encounter (#6) in upcoming Battle of Dazar'alor raid, unsure if from all difficulties)

All of the above can be disregarded if you have lots of gold and/or are planning on trading for some of the new battle pets. Pets related to the above are all cageable.

Did I miss anything? Please let me know!

These are the main things pet collectors can start working on now. I'll update this list if anything else pops up or comes to mind.

--------------------------------------

Overview of 8.1 Pet Battle content (available immediately after patch-release):

Breakdown of sources for upcoming new pets:

  • 7 vendor pets (all require unique currency, not gold)
  • 2 achievement pets
  • 2 profession pets (Enchanted Tiki Mask won't be available until Battle of Dazar'alor raid)
  • 1 wild pet
  • 1 quest reward pets
  • 29 dropped pets
    - 4 from paragon caches
    - 8 from Darkshore Warfront
    - 10 from Island Expeditions
    - 4 from misc new rare mobs

BlizzCon 2018 Notes For Pet Collectors

Quick notes on things announced, previewed, or hinted at during BlizzCon 2018 WoW 'What's Next' panel, plus my own speculation. Focusing on topics and stuff that pet collectors/battlers will likely be interested in.

December 11 is when we can expect Patch 8.1.5. Notable previously unannounced content for pet collectors in this patch:
  • Children's Week updates - Kul Tiras and Zandalar orphans (could this mean new/more battle pets?!)
  • Brawler's Guild returns - Unknown if the 2 existing battle pets will still be available to purchase from the Brawler's Guild vendor, and/or if there will be new additions.
NOTE: Much of Patch 8.1 has already been datamined and previewed. Lots more than just the above is coming; this is just stuff that was not yet revealed until today's panel.

After that, next major content patch will be Patch 8.2.5 (Rise of Azshara):
  • New continent to discover/explore, Nazjatar - new battle pets (baby naga!)
  • Mechagon Megadungeon - 8 bosses, Mythic only, but there was brief mention of new rewards *cough* pets...?
  • More Island Expedition maps - Very likely more pet rewards, but it's unknown how we'll obtain them.

And last but not least, where do I submit my official request for this creepy squishie-tentacle-eyeball-boi to be a collectible battle pet? :P

That's it for now. Will update if there's anything else!

Island Expedition Pets: A Discussion & Suggestions

Edit: Coincidently, developer Jeremy Feasel Tweeted this tonight, almost right as I finished up this post! Apparently drop rates might have been adjusted, although it's not clear what reward exactly has been increased. Doubloons? Azerite Power? Pets/mounts?

I still stand by what I've written below, but it's good to see developers acknowledging some adjustments will/could be made to make Island Expeditions a more enjoyable experience. Still, I hope Blizzard takes into consideration what I've discussed.

--------------------------------------

There are a total of 28 battle pets (one of which, Inky, is pictured above) that randomly drop at the end of an Island Expedition. Six of these are not cageable. At least one of these that we know of comes in multiple colors (permanently stays a color when adding it to the journal, NOT a color-changer), and players can receive duplicates.

To put it bluntly, many pet collectors attempting to collect these pets are finding it extremely underwhelming and un-fun.

It's currently unclear what factors affect whether or not players have a CHANCE to be rewarded a pet at the end of an Island Expedition. Yes, a chance, not even a guarantee, as players have met certain criteria multiple times (such as win or play on a specific difficulty), yet cannot produce consistent results. This makes it frustrating because it feels as if there is zero progress being made toward the end goal: collect all Island Expedition pets.

It would help collectors feel much more inclined to continue the search for these pets if there were known factors to help guide them.

  • Does Island difficulty matter? If so, how?
  • Does winning vs losing mean higher chance for a pet?
  • Do players need to defeat specific mobs during the scenario?
  • Do players have to beat the other team by a certain margin or in a time limit?
  • etc.

Any other information would be helpful and appreciated so collectors know they're not doing the "wrong" thing and are on the right path. No one likes to feel like they're wasting their time, and the feeling of realizing you could have been doing X instead of the incorrect Y is devastating.

This combined with how awkward Island Expeditions can sometimes be, especially if in a PuG (it's a miracle if all members actually stick together and work as a team, instead of wandering off to do their own thing), makes these scenarios fairly tedious and not fun. Many collectors view it as a grind for the sake of a grind, with only the tiniest hope of a pet at the end.

Giving collectors some information would absolutely give them a better idea of 'the how and what' rather than giving the generic advice to, "just run more and hope RNG is on your side." Knowing and understanding the factors would make it feel less hopeless and lacking in progress, which would make it a bit more enjoyable.

Some Suggestions
In addition to letting collectors know 'the how and what' as noted above, I wholeheartedly would love to see these Island Expedition pets available for purchase with doubloons some time in the future. We don't have to call it a "catch-up mechanic", but ok, who are we kidding. It would be a catch-up mechanic.

At the moment, I'm finding very little use for doubloons. I only very rarely buy the consumables that slightly boost my performance during an Expedition. There's just nothing really compelling me to do so. So in the end, the currency is starting to stack up and yet I don't have any real meaningful and fun way to spend them.

It would be mercy upon all collectors if the Island Expedition pets could be bought with all of this new currency that we're accumulating. Especially toward the end of the expansion. Most of the time all we get is Azerite Power as a reward for completing an Island Expedition, but when Azerite Power doesn't matter as much anymore and would therefore be a less than mediocre reward, what's a more appropriate reward than to offer up pets to purchase in exchange for all of your hard-earned doubloons?

Collectors would still need to grind these scenarios to collect doubloons; it's still random whether or not players receive any currency at all. There's no suggestion for a "freebie" here.

Offering the option to buy the Island Expedition pets with doubloons would also give collectors a concrete objective. A tangible objective more often than not provides more motivation to grind out activities because players can actively see their progression. It would feel more productive, fun, and a better experience overall.

Another suggestion that I've seen float around is to increase the drop rate of the pets, period. My only problem with this is that it doesn't necessarily address the problem with the piling up of doubloons and nothing fun to use them on.

Not to mention duplicate pets can drop, and some would probably prefer having more control over which pets they receive in order to round-out their collections. Missing the X-colored pet? Ok, well I'll focus on collecting enough currency to buy it off the vendor and try my luck there.

Edit: Another suggestion, "bad luck protection" for Island Expeditions. After X number of runs (could even be a range, such as 10 - 20 runs, so as to keep it RNG-esque) you're more likely to get a pet reward than not. Something like this could work too, although the RNG aspect of it could still prove frustrating.

In Closing
Island Expeditions are a neat concept, and in theory are quite fun. I could see this being taken to the competitive stage. However, many collectors do not care to be the #1 Island Expedition-runner in all of NA or whatever. As the actual achievement suggests, "I'm [only] Here for the Pets". :P

Some additional information would go a long way to helping collectors feel more willing to run these scenarios endlessly. Many are not against a grind, but if progress is invisible it makes it more difficult to continue.

Many collectors would appreciate some consideration toward the Island Expedition pet rewards. Allow us to purchase them with doubloons - this will not take away from participation, as we'll still need to grind Expeditions for an RNG chance at currency. It will provide a specific goal for collectors, tangible progress, while also making use of the already existing currency.

I hope Blizzard takes all of this into consideration and gives it some thought. Some compromise would be appreciated - I want to enjoy this new feature, and hopefully I've outlined how it can be improved. :)

Battle For Azeroth - Unlocking Vendors and Vendor Pets

UPDATE: As of Patch 8.1, players can obtain an item, A Shady Message, which unlocks a follower mission. Complete this mission at your War Table (on your faction boat) to unlock a vendor that will sell the opposite faction's pets.

  • Horde vendor - Olly (sells Alliance pets for Polished Pet Charms)
  • Alliance vendor - Dodger (sell Horde pets for Polished Pet Charms)

Certain restrictions apply, such as the vendors will not sell pets gated by reputation or Bumbles, for example, which is locked behind an Alliance-only achievement.

Currently the only known way of obtaining the item that begins the follower mission is winning a PVP Pet Battle match (queued).

-----------------------------

To my surprise, many of the vendor pets in BFA cannot be obtained in a straightforward manner. A lot have prerequisites, such as a certain quest or achievement completed, or rare elite killed, etc. If you don't meet the requirements, the pets will not appear on the vendor, or the vendor will not be available.

After completing a prerequisite, you should receive some sort of in-game mail from the vendor that now has the pet for sale (not always the case, I've yet to receive any mail - this could be a bug).

I've put together a list of details from Wowhead comments, WarcraftPets and the Bnet Pet Battle forum on how to unlock certain vendors and pets on those vendors.

I'm almost positive that there are more vendor pets that have prerequisites, but I haven't been able to find info on them yet. If you know of any additional ones please let me know!

Unlocking Vendors:

Nigel Rifthold ([A] vendor sells 5 pets)
Note: You do not have to do the quest chain to "save" Nigel before completing the process below.
  • Head to Anyport (western coast of Drustvar)
  • Buy 10 Tirasreli Gourmet Chocolate from Xun Xun Sweetflower
  • Travel to 52,31 in Drustvar (west of Fallhaven, just above the "F" in the name)
  • Climb up a hill and enter a tree house
  • Loot the chest that's inside if you haven't already
  • Click on the chest a second time (consumes the chocolates), Nigel will appear and be a vendor.

Shoak ([H] & [A] vendor sells 4 pets)
  • Alliance - Head to 55,36 and find Kajosh. Complete the quest chain. Shoak will appear in the Horde camp, Gloom Hallow (Alliance can interact with him, but you'll agro the camp).

Jenoh ([H] vendor sells 5 pets)

Unlocking Specific Vendor Pets:

Ranishu Runt - sold by Jenoh (H)

Accursed Hexxer - sold by Shoak (H) OR Blind Wunja (A & H)

Swamp Toad - sold by Shoak (H?)

Lil' Tika - sold by Happy Holaua (H)

Lil' Benfon - sold by Happy Holaua (H)

Child of Jani - sold by Happy Holaua (H)

Mechanical Prairie Dog - sold by Dana Pull (A)

Greatwing Macaw - sold by Dana Pull (A)

Smoochums - sold by Nigel Rifthold (A)

Frenzied Cottontail - sold by Nigel Rifthold (A)

Drustvar Piglet - sold by Nigel Rifthold (A)
  • Complete the quests at Carver's Harbor, Drustvar, ending with Cured Ham

Battle For Azeroth: Wild Battle Pet Colors

BFA adds 27 new wild pets to 6 new Horde and Alliance zones. Many of these pets come in more than one color, so if you're a color-collector (like myself) get ready for some hunting!

Here are examples of the different skins (previews from BFA Beta - things could change prior to release). Warning, image heavy!
