8.1.5 PTR: New Pets From Raiding With Leashes VI, Children's Week, DMF

DMF balloon companions cannot battle and are not cageable.

We're kicking off 2019 with a new PTR cycle. Patch 8.1.5 PTR is up and new Pet Battle content was added.

At least 20 new pets so far:
- 11 dropped pets and 1 meta-achievement reward
  • Children's Week updates
- 4 new pets
  • Darkmoon Faire additions
- 3 new pets
  • Last but not least, 1 pet from "A Quest"

Some of my personal favorites/highlights of the RWL6 set.

Full list of 8.1.5 datamined pets can be found here.

The Pet Journal doesn't list specific bosses for the RWLVI pets yet. It's interesting that there are only 3 MoP raids listed for the achievement too. The last raids, Throne of Thunder and Siege of Ogrimmar are missing from this set of RWL pets. Will these 2 raids get their own RWL treatment? Or will they simply not be included? There are a number of pets that already drop from these raids, but we'll have to wait and see if they'll be grandfathered into RWL or if they'll stay as separate, standalone drops. Whatever Blizzard decides it may set precedence for future similar situations where pets are released as drops from raid bosses ahead of that particular raid's corresponding RWL achievement.

List of existing MoP-raid dropped pets (Throne of Thunder & Siege of Orgimmar):

The Brawler's Guild will also be making its return. No new pets from there so far, but the 2 previously released pets (Clock'em and Tylarr Gronnden) will be available again. Same requirements as before.

That's it for now. They only announced the return of the Brawler's Guild and Children's Week updates during last year's BlizzCon preview of 8.1.5, but it's possible more Pet Battle content (even more than RWL6?!) could be added in this upcoming patch. We'll have to wait and see.

Happy Holidays 2017

Wishing everyone a Happy Merry Season's Christmas Holidays!

Just a Tranquil Mechanical Yeti pal'ing around with the Globe Yeti. ;)

Don't forget to loot the presents under the Winter Veil tree in Ironforge and Orgrimmar (starting December 25).

Here's hoping that 2018 will be better, brighter, and filled with lots of fun new pets. May RNG be kind to us all.

Stay safe, be well, and happy collecting & battling. ❤

Thoughts On New Winter Veil Pet - Globe Yeti

Feast of Winter Veil has begun! There's a new pet to collect, the Globe Yeti. And what would a new pet be without its own controversial implementation?

Unlike the other Winter Veil pets, the Globe Yeti is a wild pet that has a somewhat unique spawn. It can only pop up within the giant snow globe in Ironforge and Orgrimmar during Winter Veil.

Despite being a wild pet, it doesn't appear as such on the mini-map, so catching it spawn will take a little more effort. I highly recommend making a macro to /tar Globe Yeti and then keybinding the "Interact With Target" function. This way you can quickly target and engage one in battle once it pops up.

On top of those things (and here's the kicker), only ONE spawns every ~30 minutes or so, making this 'first come, first serve' capture frustrating for some collectors. It's literally a race to see who can click and/or interact the fastest, not to mention additional competition due to connected/sharded realms (excluding RP realms; finding a low population RP server might be your best bet).

It's a pretty straight forward capture for some, and a less than enjoyable experience for others. Some collectors may not have time to camp the area, while others might not be lucky/quick enough to nab the Globe Yeti as it spawns.

I should also mention that I haven't seen it happen firsthand, but there's some concern that non-pet battlers are trolling by killing this wild pet as it pops up. If the Globe Yeti can be targeted and killed by player spells and abilities, that needs to be changed ASAP. With its limited spawning, it would be devastating to see one die because of another player deciding to AOE the area.

The in-game holiday event lasts for a little over 2 weeks, so hopefully there's enough time for everyone to collect a Globe Yeti of their own. But even so, it doesn't feel very good or festive to stress about collecting this battle pet before the event ends.

Personally, I think this spawn mechanic is interesting but could use some adjustments to make it less punishing for collectors. Especially since this is a limited-time pet.

I'd love to see the number of spawns increase incrementally as the event goes on, so by the end of Winter Veil there are multiple Globe Yetis up for collectors who are either unlucky or have time constraints. That or perhaps a reduced spawn timer.

I absolutely hope those looking to collect the Globe Yeti will be able to this year. Waiting an entire year for more to spawn is brutal. Granted, it could be worse. The Yeti could be depending on RNG *shudders*... so I'm certainly thankful that that's not the case.

There are a couple of things one can do to increase chances of collecting this pet.
1. Create a character on a low population, RP realm.

2. Make a /tar macro and use a keybind for the "Interact With Target" function.

I, and I'm sure many others, wouldn't mind if Blizzard gave a helping hand to spread the love a bit more though. 'Tis the season for giving and sharing, right? What better way to celebrate that than to ensure a fair and even distribution of this fun new companion? :)

Love Is Definitely In the Air

Happy Valentine's Day, February 14th, and/or Tuesday to all!

No new pets were added with this year's Love Is In The Air in-game event, but there was a new item that "buffs" an existing pet. ^_~

#buffpeddlefeet can now be realized with Peddlefeet's Buffing Creme! It puts a Well Buffed buff on Peddlefeet that turns him slightly translucent and sparkly. This consumable can be purchased from the holiday vendors for one token.

Some background: Once upon a time, a character by the name of Zepp dreamed of the day where Peddlefeet would be buffed. Perhaps this isn't the exact "buff" Zepp had in mind, but a buff is a buff. ^^;

In addition to the creme, while I was looking for a suitable body of water to use my Love Boat toy in, I discovered a tiny, adorable change to Dalaran (Broken Isles).

I'm not sure if this is temporary or a permanent addition, but it would seem Trashy has found a cute companion to spend this special day with. :)

Normally, Trashy is a mob that wanders around Margoss' Retreat (the fishing island floating just outside of Dalaran). Today, I was surprised to find him with Cinnamon, an adorable red panda with a bow. Cinnamon usually hangs out in Curiosities & Moore shop in Dalaran.

We'll have to wait and see if this love is just a fling, or something more. hehe ^^; (note: There's a Trashy Jr. hanging around in the Dalaran Sewers; could Cinnamon have anything to do with that...? *wink*)

Anyway, I hope everyone has/had a great day. <3

Season's Greetings - Sled Rides Are Best With Friends (And Pets!)

Wishing everyone a safe and wonderful holiday season!

Don't forget to loot the Gently Shaken Gift underneath the Winter Veil tree in Ironforge or Orgrimmar for your very own Red Wooden Sled. There's also new Perky Pug hats, "Merry Munchkin" Costume from Carefully Wrapped Present.

You can summon out a battle pet, target it and then use the sled to place your pet on top. Then click on the sled and pull it around for a fun little sled ride!

Or if you want to get fancy...

Combine a few toys together for even more shenanigans! Pepe + Pet Mirror + Fruit Hat + Skymirror + Sled = Are we doing it right yet? ;) Needless to say, I'm having a lot of fun with this new toy. At the expense of my OH, of course hehe.

Have a good one, everyone. Enjoy the new toys, hug your pets, and have an epic day!

Hallow's End: Three New Seasonal Wild Pets

Hallow's End is here, and it's been a relaxing and enjoyable event so far! There are three new pets: Ghastly Rat, Ghost Maggot, and Spectral Spinner.

What makes these new pets special is that they're seasonal wild pets. You can only capture them during Hallow's End, and they require an item to spawn.

To collect these pets, you'll need to gather up 5 Spooky Supplies by completing the four daily quests available in your garrison. These quests are straight forward and pretty easy. Props to the developers for placing the quest objectives all in a centralized area. Less travel time means less time wasted! :)

After you've collected enough currency, speak with Izzy Hollyfizzle in your garrison. Buy Creepy Crawlers from her, and then use the item.

Similar to the Sumprush Rodent's Rodent Crate, the item will spawn a bunch of wild pets in your garrison.

Unlike the Rodent Crate, the wild pets do not despawn! They persist through logging out and zoning, and I'm fairly confident they will last throughout the entire in-game holiday since they're supposed to be "spooky decorations". We'll see though.

You can invite others to your garrison if they want to collect the wild pets. The pets are targetable by player spells and thankfully, are insta-respawn if you come across a breed or quality that you're not interested in. Makes for quick searching if you just want to find a rare or specific breed.

These pets also count as standard pet battles, so you can farm pet experience from within the comfort of your (or someone else's) garrison. :D

Each pet comes in 4 or 5 breeds, so I had trouble deciding which to keep and which to release. Normally I wouldn't be concerned about wild pet breeds, but since these pets are exclusive to this event, I'd rather not miss out on a breed and then have to wait an entire year to collect it.

Thanks to Lio and Jere, I settled on the following breeds:
Ghastly Rat
  • S/B
  • H/S
  • P/B

Ghost Maggot
  • P/B
  • P/S
  • S/S

Spectral Spinner
  • P/S
  • P/B
  • S/S
I haven't noticed any of these pets doing anything interesting for their idle animations, which is a shame. Maybe I just haven't idled long enough though? *crosses fingers* For pets that re-use existing models, it would be awesome if they had an interaction. Something new to add to something old(er), yenno? ;P

Ah well, I'm really satisfied with how collecting these new wild pets turned out. Since this new mechanic worked out well, does this mean future holiday updates could include seasonal wild pets too? I'm half hoping the answer is yes! ^_^

Stout Alemental - New Brewfest Pet

Brewfest started yesterday and there are new goodies to collect, including a new pet!

The Stout Alemental is available for purchase during this in-game holiday for 200 Brewfest Prize Tokens. If it's the only pet/toy that you need or want to collect, it should only take you a couple of days. Depending on how well you do during the ram racing, of course.

Speaking of which, Blizzard changed the ram racing slightly -- instead of using an item given to you by the quest giver, the reins to make your mount go faster is now an Extra Action Button. You still get the item, but it's infinitely easier to keybind the button and/or make a macro to use it.

I recommend setting up your binds prior to even starting the ram quests, as the one you get that allows you to collect as many tokens as you can starts quite abruptly after turning in the prerequisite quest.

Anyway, after two days of doing all the quests/dailies and killing Coren Direbrew, I collected enough tokens to buy my new pet!

While idling about waiting to see if it had any special idle animations, I noticed that its color shifts back and forth between orange and a dark brown.

As you can see in the images above, the Stout Alemental starts as a bright orange but then changes until it becomes a dark brown, and then back again. Pretty neat and subtle effect!

It's also significantly bigger than its cousins, the Skunky Alemental and all of the Pandaren spirit pets. Add a Magic Pet Biscuit, and the Stout Alemental is even taller than my nelf! haha

So far I haven't seen it do anything interesting, but I guess we can't ask for too much. It's enough that we get a new pet, yea? :)

Fire On a Stick, Fire On a Stick!

The Lunar Festival just started, and although there are no new pets this year, new toys, engineering schematics, and this lovely gem pictured above (Perky Pug not included) were added.

The Perky Blaster adds a buff to your Perky Pug that causes it to run around in a circle with a firework in its mouth. These consumables are cheap, one coin for a stack of five, and they're not soulbound. So you know I just had to stock up on them. XD If I have time during the week, I'll probably head out on alts to pick up easy coins and send more pet fireworks to my banker alt to hold for future use.

Other than that, it's a pretty tame Lunar Festival. No new pets, just the two existing lanterns -- Lunar Lantern (A) and Festival Lantern (H). Collect away! :)

Love is in the Air New Pet, Mulgore Hatch-- Oh Wait

Love is in the Air has arrived, and I love that there's a new pet! :P

The new pet from the Valentine's in-game event is the Lovebird Hatchling. If it looks familiar, that's because it's a smaller version of the Swift Lovebird mount. Not only that, but it uses the same model and skin as the Mulgore Hatchling. Can't say I'm thrilled about the latter, but a new pet is a new pet right?

I was hoping that maybe the Lovebird Hatchling would have a unique idle animation/interaction to set it apart from the Mulgore Hatchling, but I haven't noticed it do anything interesting yet.

Since it's related to the Love is in the Air event, I thought maybe it might interact with another Lovebird Hatchling or even its mount counterpart. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find someone else on my server with the pet or mount to test this idea out. I also can't seem to talk the OH into grinding Love Tokens to purchase one either lol. :P

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that this pet is basically the same as a previously released one. Less sprightly, though, since it doesn't seem to run/walk away randomly like the Mulgore Hatchling. It's kind of a bummer so far. Aside from adding a neat idle animation/interaction, Blizzard could have used a different model, as suggested by Wayne on Twitter.

Sure, if they had used a different model it would no longer match the mount, but as long as it was named differently there wouldn't be any expectations for the two to match. Besides, the Mulgore Hatchling matches the Swift Lovebird mount just fine. :P

Ahh well. I can't complain too much. A new pet from an event is still awesome, and I'm satisfied with the steady release of pet-related content. This is just me nit-picking, don't mind me. Go give your Lovebird Hatchling a hug and a kiss, love is in the air after all! :)

Pilgrim's Bounty - Cluck Cluck, Goes the Chicken

Second day of Pilgrim's Bounty: Bush Chicken acquired! I was somewhat worried that I wouldn't have any luck getting this pet (without resorting to buying it off of the AH), so I'm relieved that I can check this pet off my list.

The Bush Chicken is a possible drop from the new reward bag, Pilgrim's Bounty, from the holiday dailies. The five dailies aren't account-wide so you can complete them on multiple characters. All you need is cooking, any skill level works. You can do the quests even with cooking 1; as you complete quests, you'll be required to cook different/more things which in turn raises your cooking skill.

I had to level cooking on a few of my toons, which was time consuming but worth it in the end. The only issue was the RNG. There were reports that some had the Bush Chicken drop on their first few toons, while others said they didn't get the pet until 8+ toons down the line.

In the end I was part of the latter camp, and after nothing on the first day (30+ bags, that's 6+ toons) I finally received my little chicken on the second day. :D

I won't go into any kind of guide or walk through, but here are some things that I observed while working my way through the dailies.
• You can level cooking to 300 with JUST the holiday food that's required for the dailies.

• While leveling cooking using the holiday recipes, don't vendor the food. You can save them and turn them in another day.

• Purchase extra materials from each city's vendor (mainly city specific materials; pumpkins, cranberries, sweet potatoes), cook them all at once, and save them to turn in the next day. The turkeys are a bit of a pain though, but easy enough to find/kill.

• Mages are a godsend! My OH and I teamed up and we made use of each other's mages heh.

Chef's Hat makes things go by much faster. Especially if you're leveling cooking and need to make 100 pumpkin pies or whatever.
This might seem like a grind, with a relatively low drop rate, AND it's limited time (only one week) but the consolation is that it can be completed on multiple toons each day. As long as your character can learn cooking 300 (level restrictions may apply), you can have an army of toons farming this pet for you. It WILL eat up a large portion of your day, though, but little things like the Chef's Hat and mage portals help.

Overall, I'm satisfied. I put time and effort into collecting a pet and was eventually rewarded. Plus now I have a ton of toons with at least 300 cooking, if not higher! :P

Hallow's End Funsies

Happy Hallow's End! The updated in-game holiday is here, and I spent almost my entire day collecting the two new pets and enough Tricky Treats for 10 Yipp-Saron Costumes. Yep, it was a long day.

Collecting Widget the Departed and Cursed Birman was straight forward. It just took a buttload of time and patience. Travel time is a bitch, even with flying.

When I found out Perky Pug costume needed 150 Tricky Treats (same price as one of the new kitties), I decided to collect the two pets on my alts, rather than my main. If my main was still on the same server as my alts, I would have switched that around since the costumes aren't BoP, but alas.

In the end I split up the task of farming Tricky Treats between two alts. Pandaria, Northrend, Outland, then one of the daily quests and a Headless Horseman run was all I needed for one pet each alt. That freed up my main to go out and loot ALL of the candy buckets in the game so she could buy the pug costume. Priorities, damnit. Totally worth it though...

"I am the lucid dream"

In his (dog)house at R'lyeh Elwynn, Cthulhu Perky Pug waits dreaming.

Internet high-five if you get the reference. Love me some Lovecraft!

150 Tricky Treats buys you one bundle (x5) of Yipp-Saron Costumes, but I had enough to buy two bundles (x10). How could I NOT dump all my currency into this awesomeness?! :P

The costume lasts for as long as your pug is out. Loading, re-summoning, etc. removes the costume, sadly. If I could buy these outfits all year 'round (using gold or some other readily available currency), I wouldn't mind so much. But since I only have 10 (9 now since I used one for the screenshot lol) I'm sooo nervous to use them. I don't want to "waste" them accidentally. :(

Anyway, I absolutely love my little old-god haha. :D

Reaching another milestone
I finally earned So. Many. Pets. today!

Collecting the first kitty pushed my unique pets count up to 600, and Stormwing was immediately added to my Pet Journal. Gorgeous.

Part of me feels like I should maybe feel embarrassed for reaching this point, but I don't feel bad about it at all. Sure, I invest my time and energy into pixels in a game (that won't last forever), but it's something I wholeheartedly enjoy. It's not as if it's a quick and easy task either.

So with that in mind, I definitely feel accomplished and proud of this milestone, and I'm even looking forward to the next goal. XD

Doesn't seem quite right...
Last but not least, I don't know what happened post-patch 6.0 but the Feline Familiar seems to have lost her broom. :(

As amusing as I find this, I also really loved the Feline Familiar's adorable little broom. Hopefully floaty-air-kitty is just a bug and she'll get her mount back. I mentioned this to the devs on Twitter but we'll see.

Escort an Orphan, Collect All the Pets

Children's Week is currently in full swing. There are many pets to collect and achievements to complete.

For those interested in just the pets, if you have multiple characters, you can complete the quests and pick a different reward for each toon. Pets are account-wide, so unless you have a preference for collecting all of the Children's Week pets on a single character or wish to earn the achievement Veteran Nanny, you can collect all of them in the same week.

There's a total of ten Children's Week pets, spread out across three expansions (Vanilla, Burning Crusade, and Wrath of the Lich King). Unfortunately, Pandaria seems to be devoid of any orphans to help, at least for now. Maybe there will be new quests and pets in Pandaria and Draenor in the future.

Wowhead has a great guide that covers collecting the pets as well as the achievements.

Other helpful write-ups for Children's Week detail how to complete School of Hard Knocks. If you're like me and really find PVP unbearable, this achievement may seem daunting. Here are two guides that may help reduce any stress and anxiety, as well as tips on how to get it done - Wowhead's 'Children's Week Guide - School of Hard Knocks How-To' and Cynwise's 'The School of Hard Knocks'.

The achievements aren't necessary for collecting pets, but it's a good way to feel even more productive during this fun-filled week. Collect tons of pets and how about being one step closer to that Violet Proto-Drake? It couldn't hurt. Well, it might hurt your orphan a little. Battlegrounds aren't a friendly place for a little kid! ;P

Brainstorming New Pets For the Lunar Festival

The Lunar Festival is currently underway in-game, but unfortunately there aren't any new pets to be had this year. It's understandable since developers have their hands full making the next expansion. Still, I can't help but feel a little disappointed that there's nothing new to collect. It does give me some solace contemplating the possible future pets that could be implemented, though.

One new pet for the Lunar Festival that I wouldn't mind seeing, and I've mentioned it before, is a miniature Omen. We already have the Core Hound Pup and Chrominius, but Omen has a slightly different model that includes proper looking dog/wolf heads. On top of that, a mini-Omen would likely be a different family-type, maybe beast or magic with a mix of abilities between the two. It would fit well with the in-game event and give players a fresh goal to strive for.

The biggest question is whether or not it would be a drop from Omen himself, or a quest reward for killing the demigod. As much as I hate to admit this, since I'm not a fan of RNG dropped pets, it would probably make more sense if a "spawn of Omen" came from the boss (personal player loot please!) after defeating it. Or perhaps wild spawns could appear after Omen is sent back into his deep sleep. Cute little, non-hostile, docile versions that are echoes of Omen when he wasn't all demonic and angry. :P

Mini-Omen is merely one idea for an update to next year's Lunar Festival. Perculia Tweeted a Wowhead comment that mentioned a great idea, pets that match each year's corresponding chinese zodiac animal.

So for example, this year is the year of the horse, so a pony would have been appropriate as the obtainable pet for this year's festival. Past tense. The festival's already here so it's too late to release a new pet. Come next year the zodiac animals will be the goat. :(

The downside to this idea, though, is that we already have many of the animals in the zodiac. We're missing a proper horse/pony/foal and rooster, but the rest are pretty much already represented in the game. That may mean we would only be getting reskins of existing pets, since creating an entirely new model for the 12 zodiac animals would likely rank low on Blizzard's priority list. Reskins aren't a bad thing, and I welcome any pet into my army of companions. There are some players who are against re-using existing models and simply slapping a new coat of paint on it, though.

Another thing to consider is how would we obtain each pet? Quest reward? Drop? Vendor? Would each one only be available during their corresponding year? If the answer is yes to the last question, I'll have to laugh. The animals of the chinese zodiac cover 12 years, and who knows if we'll be playing this game for that long. There are ways around that of course (offering more than one pet per year is an example), but it makes me smile to think that Blizzard would be willing to keep the game going for 12+ years just so collectors could get their fix lol. :P

Anyway, I'm definitely hoping for something new next year, after things have calmed down and there's more time to update the in-game holidays. There are many possible pets that could be added to not just this event but other events as well. Some holidays feel long overdue for a revamp or another pet addition. Hopefully the absence of new pets or things to collect isn't due to a lack of developer interest, but because of a lack of time to create and implement fun ideas.

Rotten Little Helper Available Now!

Today's the first day of Winter Veil and guess what? Apparently the Rotten Little Helper drops from the holiday world boss daily quest as well as the gift under the tree (the drop from under the tree has yet to be confirmed since it can only be looted starting on the 25th)!

I'm not sure if this is intended or a bug, as the official Blizzard guide to Winter Veil doesn't mention it dropping from the daily quest. At the moment it only lists the Rotten Little Helper as a drop from the Gaily Wrapped Present, but it could simply be an error in the blog post and not the game.

That being said, hopefully this isn't a bug and no changes will be made because this means more chances for this pet during the holiday event. More chances is always better when it comes to pets that are only available for a limited amount of time per year in my opinion. It also means players don't have to wait until the 25th of this month, and can choose to spend time (or not) attempting for the pet.

If this was indeed intended, I think this will be the first holiday boss dropped pet that's not Bind on Pick Up. It's not a good or bad thing, just a note of a change. :P

Anyway, the pet item is blue in quality but the pet, when learned, is uncommon so you'll need a Humanoid stone to upgrade it. It's BoE and cageable, so it's possible to trade, sell or gift to friends/family. What an interesting gift, though. A grumpy little helper. It goes well with the Lump of Coal? XD

Rotten Little Helper Speculation

The Feast of Winter Veil will be starting in 8 days, and you know what that means.. A new pet, the Rotten Little Helper!

It's still unknown where this pet will come from, but there are two likely sources so far:
A drop from the Stolen Present (reward from completing the daily quest to kill a holiday world boss)

OR

A drop from one of the presents under the holiday tree in Ironforge and Orgrimmar.
Now, you may be wondering, why does it matter where it comes from so long as we can just get it eventually? What matters here is time. IF the pet is a drop from the daily quest, we'll be able to make attempts for it the very first day of Winter Veil (December 16). Not only that, but we'll also be able to make efficient use of our limited time to get the pet, and make as many attempts each day as possible. Plus those that may not have as much time to spend each day can also prioritize the Winter Veil daily. But that's only if that's how we'll receive the pet.

IF the pet drops from one of the presents from under the tree, we'll have to wait a bit longer for it. The presents become lootable starting December 25 (generally in the morning, not at daily reset).

So what do we know that could help us determine where the Rotten Little Helper will come from? Well.. not much. It doesn't help that the Pet Journal is very general in describing the pet's source, "World Event: Feast of Winter Veil." The description of the pet does mention these evil Winter Helpers joining up with the Abominable Greench, though, and that's the holiday world boss that we must kill for the daily. Keep in mind that the description doesn't always mean anything or give hints. Most of the time it's just flavor text.

We're kind of still left in the dark, and unsure of where to start with this pet. Do we try for the daily or simply wait until the 25th of this month? Both?

My personal guess is that it will be a drop from under the holiday tree. Why? The pet is Bind on Use which would fall in line with the other present-dropped pets. Generally, the holiday world boss-dropped pets are Bind on Pick Up (to make them extra unique/special?). Examples are Toxic Wasteling, Frigid Frostling and Lumpy - all of which can only be obtained from a daily reward bag. But that isn't to say that Blizzard will NEVER add a BoU holiday boss-dropped pet. It's entirely possible, but for me, unlikely.

It was pointed out to me that the new Winter Veil achievement implies that we'll be receiving a new toy from the presents this year, which may mean that there's no room for a new pet under the tree...

But! Who's to say that the current present that has a chance to drop 1 out of 4 BoU pets can't include another (new) pet? It's entirely possible that the Gaily Wrapped Present had its loot table extended by one, so instead of only 1 out of 4 maybe it will be 1 out of 5 pets this year.

Despite my arguments (and evidence?) that the Rotten Little Helper will come from under the tree this year, we won't know for sure until the holiday starts. Even if in the end the pet doesn't drop from the daily, I would still complete the quest every day just in case. Besides, there's a chance for Lumpy from that goodie bag. :P

What I DO know for sure is that I can't wait for a new pet! :3

Holiday Wild Pets: Terrific or Terrible Idea?

Currently all major in-game holidays have pets associated with them. From Pilgrim's Bounty's Plump Turkey to Love is in the Air's Peddlefeet and Toxic Wasteling, each one has at least one corresponding pet. Sidenote: I say "major holiday" because there are some events such as Day of the Dead, Pirates' Day and the Harvest Festival that are fairly short and/or don't have much to do/collect during them.

Many collectors, old and new, have managed to obtain most if not all these pets, though. After everything's been collected and all achievements completed, what's to do after that? Blizzard could just add more pets to each holiday, but with the implementation of Pet Battles, there is another idea that might be more interesting than simply adding another vendor or holiday boss-dropped companion. As stated in the linked Tweet, capturable wild pets that only spawn during holidays. Think of all the possibilities! It would be a great way to finally introduce those pink bunnies for Noblegarden. ;)

Now, if wild pets for specific holidays becomes a thing, it could go either very well or turn into a nightmare for collectors. I'm a huge critic of limited-time pets, as it's somewhat punishing for those that don't actually have the time and collectors in general. There's a lot of stress and anxiety, during certain holidays, due to many overbearing factors that collectors have to deal with. So if wild pets is the next step, there should be some things to consider in order to keep things balanced.

My biggest issue with holiday pets is that collectors must contend with multiple factors for the sake of "rarity" (not the quality of the pet, but in terms of how difficult/exclusive a pet is). Namely RNG, low droprates, limited attempts, and the pets being around for a limited time. The latter two aren't huge issues these days since most holiday companions are now cageable and account-wide. (It's still pretty rough for those who don't have the means to utilize alts and extra gold, such as new players.)

In previous situations where holiday pets were involved, it was great if you got lucky on your first few attempts at acquiring said pet, but it was pretty devastating if the RNG gods weren't in your favor. It was painful to hear about others finding nothing but dissapointment day after day. With the clock ticking down, it was discouraging to try but still come up empty handed without so much as a consolation prize.

That being said, consider these factors being applied to wild pets, pets that CAN'T be traded. The result would definitely be frustration and headache.

Some things wouldn't apply obviously, such as droprates and limited attempts. But imagine being able to find and battle only one holiday pet per day. It doesn't sound all that pleasant right? Or maybe it seems ok because you can just capture the first one you find and upgrade it with a Battle-Stone. Keep in mind that we're talking about wild pets, though, and there's bound to be loads of competition. These will be in great demand if there are only limited spawns throughout the duration of the event. It could get pretty infuriating if the spawn-rates are too low or too few. Add on top of that the fact that they'll only be around for a week or so. It sounds less and less pleasant the more you think about it.

It's understandable that Blizzard would like to keep some pets "rare", but there has to be a balance between rarity and actual availability. When collectors face so many factors (and have little to no control over any of them), the fun starts to melt away and turn into irritation. A great example of this is the Minfernal hunt, and I think this Tweet says it all.
"..getting a Minfernal was not very fun. I just wanted it cause it looked cool. Not cause it was rare."
Not all collectors feel this way, but there are many who do share the same sentiment towards certain pets. That being said, a compromise between rarity and actual availability should always be considered. Especially in the case of wild holiday pets IF they are ever implemented. Limited duration/chances can already be frustrating for both those that don't have the time and those that do, but if even more factors are added for the sake of just "rarity", the fun is lost for many players.

There are probably many ways developers can implement holiday-only wild pets, and my hope is that if they choose to do so, they pick a system that's a bit more forgiving than the previous holiday-pet model. If there are limited attempts, perhaps increase the spawn/droprate. If there are limited spawns/drops, then maybe allow players to find them in many areas. The bad luck protection mechanic is being released soon, so somewhere in there might also be an idea to help players feel as though they are actually working towards their goal, rather than feeling unproductive.

Of course there's also the "replayability" factor when it comes to reoccurring in-game events, which is something that we, as collectors, need to keep in mind. To play devil's advocate, if everyone managed to capture a holiday-pet the moment it was released, would Blizzard need to keep implementing a new one each year (to each holiday) to keep us interested? That sounds pretty unreasonable when you think about how low a priority pets, pet battles, and pet collecting must be on Blizzard's "to-do" list.

So in the end it's all about compromise. Compromise between aspects of the game (rarity and fun) and between players and developers. If Blizzard hears us out and takes into consideration our issues, we must also keep in mind there is more to it than what meets the eye.

It's hard to say what will be coming in the future, and the whole holiday wild pets idea may never see a live server. The concept sounds fun, but if a good balance can't be found, I'd rather not see it be implemented at all. It's all about finding the sweet spot between gameplay and fun (even if "fun" is a subjective term). If anything, I hope all sides are taken into consideration, and even if special event wild pets are never implemented, the idea of compromise should still be applied for other features.

Have a Good One!

Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving and excellent Thursday. :)

My Plump Turkey (aka: Gobbles) realized that he's got so much to live for, and that he can make his own destiny. ;)

With this new found zest for life, we headed to Kun-Lai Summit to enjoy the crisp winter air and hangout next to a cozy campfire. Needless to say, Gobbles lived to see another day. :)

All Children's Week Pets In One Year

WoW Insider just blew my mind. Why didn't I think of it sooner? It's so simple yet brilliant - it's genius!

Get all Children's Week pets in one year. Not possible? Well with account wide pets in MoP, I think it is. :P

Because all pets will be shared across all your toons in MoP, by choosing one of each pet, you'll have all the Children's Week pets ready to summon and play with in MoP. The only trick is that you'll need level appropriate toons for the Outlands and Northrend quest chains.

For the Shattrath quests, you'll need characters that are at least level 60, while the Dalaran chain will require characters that are at least level 70. For the remaining four companions from Stormwind or Orgrimmar, you'll need alts that are at least level 10.

So this neat idea might not be for everyone. But I still say give it your best shot. The pets will still be around next year, and unlike the holiday boss dropped pets, these companions are guaranteed as long as you have the time to complete the quest chains. Don't stress out too much if you can't collect them all right away. They're worth waiting for!

They Grow So Big So Fast

It's Children's Week and although there aren't any new pet rewards this year, there is a new goodie from the quests - Magical Pet Biscuits! Bigger pets for everyone! :D

(Don't blink, don't blink, don't...
..hey, does Legs even have eyes to blink with?)

Each chain can yield 25 biscuits. You can acquire a grand total of 75 biscuits if you choose them as the reward for all three quest chains.

So even if you've collected all the companions from this in-game holiday, it might still be worth checking out just for the biscuits.

BoP Pets Still BoP On Beta

While I was cleaning out my druid's bank in hopes to make more space for xmog gear (lol), I came across two items I completely forgot I had - the Clockwork Rocket Bot and Toxic Wasteling. They're the actual BoP pet items. When I picked these up, I decided to keep them despite already knowing the spells for them. My hope was that the items would change to BoE in MoP or in the future.

Anyway, after realizing I still had them in my bank, and my druid was copied to the beta, I decided to check and see if these BoP pet items were altered on the test realm.

(Both images from the beta)

The answer is: no. As of this date and beta build 15589, they are still BoP and you can't trade them, mail them, or learn them a second time on a character that already knows them.

I'm not sure if this will change in a later beta patch, but I'll hang onto them a bit longer just to see. Part of me really doubts that they will be made into BoE, though. Which is sad since players are still receiving these BoP, holiday boss dropped pets on toons that already have them. It seems like such a waste.
