this week's pet review is of pengu, the kalu'ak penguin. as soon as i heard this would be a purchasable pet (provided that you have the correct reputation with the kalu'ak faction), i began the rep grind for him. it wasn't too difficult to reach exalted since there are repeatable dailies that just take some time to get to.
why i love it
i absolutely adore his penguin run. when i'm bored i pull out pengu, run around and watch him chase after me with his cute waddle.
another aspect of this companion that i love is when you target him and do /sexy, he may sometimes do a penguin slide! it's not a guaranteed emote like other pets, so there are times when i'm just sitting around dalaran spamming /sexy with pengu out. i'm sure i've annoyed quite a few people just to get him to do his slide. XD
what i would change
when wotlk first came out pengu was THE penguin pet, but unlike his (smaller) brother mr. chilly, pengu had red glossy eyes which made him seem a bit demonic and evil. i loved those eyes! it really made him unique when standing next to the other penguin pet. color me sad when i found out blizzard had plans to exorcise pengu. :( wish they hadn't and i wish they'd change him back.

Pet of the Week - Lil' K.T.
lil' k.t. was one of the first pets to be sold exclusively through blizzard's official online PetStore. he was gifted to me the first day blizzard announced the sale. needless to say i was ecstatic! :) and very grateful of course.
why i love it
the quality of this pet is just amazing. the detailed model, the animations, and the vocalizations. PLUS this pet interacts with the environment. lil' k.t. definitely satisfies my sadistic side. whenever i see his little frost bolt flying towards a critter, i can't help but cackle slightly myself.
my absolute favorite part about this companion? i love the way his head will randomly detach and do a full 360 spin while separated from his body. it's a subtle animation but it's a pretty unique one!
what i would change
being such a new pet and one that people must pay real life money to get it, he's a very well-rounded pet. i can't seem to think of anything i'd change at this time.
the price is cheaper than the TCG pets which makes it a steal, but because it does involve real money and not everyone can afford or will want to spend real money for lil' k.t., his "rarity" in game will still be pretty high. i would have preferred it if part of the proceeds from the sale of this pet went to more non-profit charities, but oh well. it's still a very satisfying vanity pet!

Pet of the Week - Dark Whelpling
the dark whelpling was one of the first in-game companion pet gifts that i received back in the day when pets were less sought after. not only was this pet rare, its uniqueness made it extremely pricey on the auction house too. so you can imagine my excitement and surprise upon seeing this little baby in my mailbox!
why i love it
my absolute favorite thing about the dark whelpling and all the whelplings in general is their awkward mid-flight spin. it almost looks like they're trying to chase their tails!
what i would change
i would add an animation to the whelplings. nothing fancy and i'd want to keep them unique from the onyxian whelpling, though. maybe have the dark whelpling yawn and upon doing so a small puff of fire (instead of a "deep breath") comes out of its mouth.
other than that, i wouldn't change it. oh, a small model upgrade would be cool since it does have a sort of boxy/pixel look at certain angles.

Pet of the Week - Toothy
this week's review is on toothy, a crocolisk pet obtained through the outlands fishing daily. (i'm actually breaking my rule of randomly selecting a pet to write about this time because companions with back stories are just so much more fun to gush about. :P) toothy is a very significant pet for me, even if he's one of four croc pets. the moment i learned of his existence from the PTR, i was very anxious to start doing the fishing dailies. once the server came up on patch day, i made a bee line straight for old man barlo. after completing the quest i received my reward and what do you know? lady luck was on my side that day! toothy had a new home with me and i had my very first croc pet. for the rest of the day i was on cloud nine with nearly everything going "right." toothy has always been a sort of good luck charm or good luck reminder since then. :)
why i love it
obviously the sentimental reasons outweigh any sort of superficial or cosmetic appeal i may have for toothy. but i must say that i absolutely adore his sort of baby grumble vocalization (on-click). i bet the developers had a blast coming up with what a baby crocolisk would sound like!
he's also such a cheerful little guy, always smiling that toothy grin of his. (harr harr :P) it's hard not to enjoy his company.
what i would change
to be honest, i can't really think of anything. an animation for this pet would be cool but what does a crocolisk do outside of basking in the sun and swimming all day?

Pet of the Week - Whiskers the Rat
whiskers the rat is one of the three original children's week quest rewards. i must admit that i chose him last out of the three. what can i say? the other two just seemed cuter. ^^;
why i love it
at first, the thought of a rat didn't appeal to me. but after meeting whiskers, i've come to adore these furry rodents (at least in game). i love the way he's constantly active; looking around and washing his face. this rat is probably the cleanest one in game!
the fact that he also does tricks (plays dead) is also really interesting. i wonder who taught him that because it certainly wasn't me! a smart rat indeed.
what i would change
for one of the vanilla companion pets, i'd say whiskers is pretty complete. the only extra thing i would add would be along the same idea as cat and dog/wolf pets chasing each other. rats/mice and cats not getting along too! just think of it: whiskers being chased by a siamese cat who's being chased by the perky pug. it satisfies my sadistic side :3

Pet of the Week - Durotar Scorpion
the durotar scorpion is one of the 5 horde argent tournament companion pets. as i mentioned before, i was lucky enough to find a horde trading partner on my server. we both had a definite interest in the non-combat pets, so we agreed to exchange one for one whenever we both had enough champion seals. it was a very sweet deal, and one that i'm very grateful for!
why i love it
well i adore just about any creature to critter to companion pet transition. especially one as feisty as the durotar scorpion! it's quite amusing to see it pause as we're running along, and try to take aim at me with his tail. the poison doesn't actually hurt, and most of the time it will whiz right past my head while we're moving.
interesting observation though: poison animation doesn't actually start from its tail! just before the green glob is hurled towards you, a green glow can be seen emanating from the scorpion's mouth. strange, huh?
what i would change
the only thing i can think of at this time that i would change would be the lack of sound from this pet. the classic bug/scorpid scratchy voice as you pass by it made into miniature form for the durotar scorpion would have been a nice final touch.

Pet of the Week - Tuskarr Kite
my tuskarr kite was generously gifted to me shortly after the scourgewar tcg release. a huge thank you since i never expected to get the newest tcg pets! being one out of only two kite pets, i feel strangely honored to own one.
why i love it
it's great if you're a lover of lightning! XD this is just one of those whimsical "pets" that's fun to run around with. it's also quite amusing in raids, especially when the lightning strikes at random. "what was that?! ahhh it's so big i can't see around it!"
being a druid, i especially enjoy running around while in travel form with the kite out. watching the tassels flutter in the wind as it floats behind me; it's almost as fun as flying a real kite irl!
what i would change
much to my disappointment, the tuskarr kite does not change colors each time it's summoned like the dragon kite. so i would definitely add some additional tassel colors to the tuskarr version.
also, i would definitely allow the tuskarr kite to be used while mounted (ground mounts and flying mounts). it just seems like it would be so much fun zooming across the sky with a kite fluttering behind you. that is.... if the tuskarr kite could even keep up with a flying mount.
i wonder if the higher you fly with the kite out, the higher your chances of being struck by lightning. hmm... could be why they don't allow kite flying + mount flying at the same time haha.

Pet of the Week - Peddlefeet
peddlefeet is the lovable goblin "cupid", and is obtained during the 'love is in the air' in-game festival. i was lucky enough to get peddlefeet before festival revamp when the only way to obtain the pet was through a RNG drop from v-day gifts. it was THE last night of the event and i was doing my hourly rounds of kissing guards and hoping to get lucky. and what do you know? TA-DA! to my relief i opened a gift and it had peddlefeet waiting inside for me. goes to show the RNG gods CAN be kind :P
why i love it
peddlefeet is just a neat pet. er, if you can call him that? i'm not sure goblins enjoy being called pets. well he's definitely a one of a kind of... something. lol.
he holds sentimental value for me more than anything else. the fact that i was lucky enough to receive the pet under RNG circumstances is something that i hold dear.
what i would change
i'd love to see peddlefeet do a shooting animation on random players or even on the owner. it might get a bit annoying though, having a random heart pop up above your head lol.

Pet of the Week - Brown Prairie Dog
the brown prairie dog is sold exclusively by a tauren in thunderbluff. i've always wanted a little prairie dog, but for a while it was out of my reach. i managed to obtain this pet pre-character creation change, when you could only create toons for either horde or alliance on any given server. this was one of the horde pets that i made a point to stop by and pick up while my horde account was still active.
why i love it
the prairie dog is cute in its simplicity, and i adore the way it grooms itself. it's so shy and timid looking, and i don't blame them. being such small creatures yet hanging around such large tauren and kodo. it must make for some nerve-wracking moments. ('earthquake! this is not a drill! everyone back to the burrow!') i can't help but be taken by these little critters whenever i zoom in and look into its tiny black eyes.
what i would change
a model upgrade would be splendid for this pet. atm, it seems pretty blocky and there are angles that just shouldn't exist on a prairie dog. an idle animation such as burrowing into the ground would also be a nice addition to this older companion. i can just imagine it digging down and then popping its head up to see if it's safe to come out again. ;)

Pet of the Week - Jubling
i acquired jubling during the molten core days when blackrock depths wasn't as easily solo'ed as it is today. at first i didn't even know of this frog's existence, as it was still quite rare to see anyone with it. after some research and instance solo'ing tips from a guildie, i was a proud owner of jubling's unhatched egg! then the 7 day wait began lol.
why i love it
this amphibian is on the larger side compared to its fellow froggy/toad friends. it's no surprise to me since the jubling loves beer! it's gotta have the weight to be able to handle all that alcohol it drinks :P
it's always amusing to watch the jubling literally climb the walls to quench its thirst and love for ale. although... i must admit that it's actually been a while since i last traveled to blackrock depths to pick up a few dark iron ale mugs for my jub-jub. my poor frog has not had a treat in a while.
what i would change
a "drunk" animation would definitely be a nice addition whenever the jubling drinks a little too much. i can imagine it seeing stars, flipping over onto its back and falling fast asleep. hey, even heavy weights will feel the effects of alcohol if they drink enough :P

Pet of the Week - Mojo
mojo is the lovable blue frog from zul'aman. i was one of the last in my guild to get this pet, but i was fortunate enough to have friends who were willing to give up their hex sticks so i could have extra attempts. :)
why i love it
despite mojo having the same model, different coloring as the four other frog pets, you can interact with mojo! blow him a kiss and suddenly you're a frog yourself. talk about spreading "warts" :P
one thing that i adored pre-wotlk was that you could mount and /kiss him while mounted. doing so would turn you into a frog sitting upon a GIANT mount. since the release of wotlk though, they've fixed this bug.
another bug that i enjoyed but has since been fixed is the bug where shapeshifting while a frog would turn you into a different colored frog each time.
lastly, an interesting thing that they have not fixed yet is that druids can shapeshift into bird form, sit down, and /kiss mojo. ever see a flying frog? it's great!
what i would change
while i understand that giant mounts with frogs riding them could cause gameplay issues, i don't see how a shapeshifting druid changing frog colors could hurt. please give me back my chameleon-like frog form!
other than that, i wouldn't change a thing. the model is outdated and the vocalizations aren't anything special or new, but the way players can interact with this pet makes up for these things in my opinion.

Pet of the Week - Golden Dragonhawk Hatchling
the lovely golden dragonhawk hatchling is sold exclusively by a horde vendor in eversong woods. before blizzard allowed players to create both horde and alliance characters on the same PVP realm, this as well as the majority of the other dragonhawk hatchlings were only available to alliance through the neutral auction house. i ended up creating a second account specifically for collecting all the horde-only pets. yes, one month of paid time just for more pets. XD
why i love it
i adore its gorgeous colors! all of the dragonhawk hatchlings have such stunning coloring and models. the fact that this little guy can fly alongside me while i'm flying is also a neat perk. it glides so gracefully in the air, and it makes me wish i were horde just so i could obtain the red dragonhawk mount, a reward for the mountain o' mounts (learn 100 mounts) achievement. i'm such a sucker for noncombat pets paired with their mount counterparts. :)
what i would change
i'd love to hear what a dragonhawk sounds like! an on-click vocal would be pretty interesting especially since i've yet to hear what type of sound they make (if any?). some sort of idle animation would also be nice, but i really can't think of a suitable animation to give to any of the dragonhawks. just what does one do when it's not doing anything at all? lol. overall, i guess i wouldn't change much about this pet yet.

Pet of the Week - Mulgore Hatchling
this week i'll be reviewing the mulgore hatchling. it comes from the argent tournament horde only vendors, but i was lucky enough to find a horde trading partner on my server who would log on now and then to discuss which alliance/horde pets we would exchange next. i managed to nab this bundle of pink fluff pretty quickly. if not for my fellow companion pet obsessed horde buddy, it would have taken much longer, so a huge thanks goes out to that horde for helping me out :)
why i love it
pink fluff! well besides it being ridiculously cotton-candy-ish looking, i love having a baby plainstrider. they're such unique creatures in game.
it's idle animations are pretty fun to watch. when it zooms across the screen at random, it makes people turn heads in raids. "what was that?! oh, just a non-combat pet" is the usual first response.
what i would change
at this point i wouldn't update this companion other than maybe giving it an on-click vocal. maybe a smaller, quieter version of its adult counterpart? the squawk would be a nice finishing touch. :)

Pet of the Week - Stinker
after my week hiatus this week's review will be about the 50 pet achievement reward: stinker. thankfully when this companion was implemented i had already obtained well over the required number of pets, but that didn't stop me from compulsively counting and checking again and again. i was determined that i would, without fail, get this unique pet!
why i love it
ahhh you strangely adorable skunk, why do i love you so? from a distance it seems like any other un-extraordinary critter, but upon closer inspection you'll note the finer details. it's beady, big black eyes, and it's tiny little black ears. for something that's normally known as a foul creature, it's incredibly cute. i enjoy this duality.
not to mention stinker's animation when paired with a black cat of some sorts. blizzard's inclusion of pop culture really makes me smile. i was never a huuuuuge fan of the pepe lepu cartoons (i always felt bad for the black cat who was constantly harassed by lepu :P), but i'm still amused that blizzard decided to pay a small ode to the character in the form of stinker. his mad dash after any black cat, the sudden heartbreak when he realizes his love is unrequited, and his never ending hope that maybe next time it'll work out... on it's own, these animations are endearing.
what i would change
well since i really don't know what a true skunk sounds like, i guess i can't say i'd add any on click vocals. the search for love and heartbreak animation when in the presence of a black cat is also enough animation for me to keep me interested. i don't think i'd change anything with stinker at this moment! is he worth 50 pets? i definitely think so.

Pet of the Week - Lifelike Toad
this week's pet review is about the lifelike toad. i had this pet crafted for me by a friend who was lucky enough to have the schematic. unfortunately, none of my engineering toons have been fortunate to have the plans drop for them. :(
why i love it
the on click vocalizations are endearing. it almost sounds as if the toad is purring lol. it amuses me to no end that it actually eats flies too! being mechanical, you'd think that it wouldn't actually need to eat :P
what i would change
i would give this pet a model upgrade. it's current look closely resembles the other frog/toad pets currently available, making it somewhat of a less than interesting pet. i'd prefer it if it looked unique like the mechanical chicken and mechanical squirrel. then again, if it looked more robotic it wouldn't fit its name for being "lifelike" heh. i guess i could settle for a color change then :P

Pet of the Week - Westfall Chicken
today i'll be reviewing the westfall chicken. i remember this pet being fairly rare pre-bc since it was from a quest that was cleverly "hidden." the only reason i found out about it was after seeing someone in ironforge with the (formally known) prairie chicken, and then doing some research on how to obtain one of my own. it was quite fun spamming the emote at a chicken in westfall while all the lowbies were questing around me. they must have been so confused as to why on earth a druid would waste time playing with chickens. XD
why i love it
my favorite thing about this vanity pet is the way it's obtained. the westfall chicken is another example of how clever and sneaky blizzard can be. but that's ok in my book because i love easter eggs! (and easter... chickens? :P)
what i would change
being one of blizzard's earlier companion creations, this pet doesn't have an on-click vocalization! a mute chicken! the horror! so i would definitely give it a "squawk" or something chicken sounding.
as for idle animation... well maybe it's just me, but i think it would be cute if it periodically laid an egg. whether or not a chick hatched from said egg would be random.
why i love it
my favorite thing about this vanity pet is the way it's obtained. the westfall chicken is another example of how clever and sneaky blizzard can be. but that's ok in my book because i love easter eggs! (and easter... chickens? :P)

Pet of the Week - Argent Squire
this week's pet of the week will feature the argent squire. i remember working towards getting this er... "pet". the grind was rough, but it was worth it. now i have a banker, mailbox, and vendor wherever i go!
why i love it
did i mention i have a banker, mailbox, and vendor wherever i go? :) yes, the upgrade was even more tedious to get than the argent squire himself, but i don't know where i'd be without the argent pony bridle. it comes in handy when i'm in the middle of nowhere, bags full, and not another person or mailbox in sight.
the fact that the squire mounts up when you're mounted makes it even better. gotta wonder though, where on earth did he get such a tiny pony? and how is it possible for him to ride bareback like that?!
what i would change
for starters i would lower the cooldown on the mailbox, banker, vendor option, and increase the amount of time that i have to speak with him about whichever option i've already chosen. perhaps 7 minutes for the mailbox, banker, vendor? with a cooldown of 2 hours instead of four? would that be so unreasonable?
another thing i would change is to give him the option of repairing too! gosh, you'd think that since he can visit a vendor he'd be able to find someone to repair my gear too. sure, he'd have to lug my shoulderpads, boots, gloves, etc. around. but isn't that what he's been trained to do? :P
also, the squire being a human boy is less than ideal for my female night elf. wouldn't it be more fitting if my squire were someone from my home city? someone trained and taught the ways of my kind to better assist me should i need the assistance? well, i guess that's just a minor detail.

Pet of the Week - Baby Blizzard Bear
this week's review is about the baby blizzard bear (and it's also a day late >_<). this pet was handed out to all players who logged in on blizzard's 4th anniversary and is account bound. this means any future characters that i create on my realm will receive this little guy in the mail, courtesy of one of my other alts ;)
the baby blizzard bear's model is a recycled skin from poley.
why i love it
it's a small, furry ball of white fluff! from his oversized paws to his tiny black eyes, the baby blizzard bear is adorable. plus he matches perfectly with the big blizzard bear mount.
what i would change
being a representative for blizzard's anniversary, i would have expected some sort of indication that this vanity pet is entirely unique to blizzard. instead, this companion looks relatively... common. it's behaviors are pretty tame in comparison to some of the other pets.
i would add an animation exclusive to this vanity pet to give it a more exceptional quality. perhaps when idle, it will spontaneously burst into dance (modeled after the druid bear form dance animation)?
with a new (idle) animation, it would balance out its re-used model and become a less common companion. it's cute as it is, but for being such a "rare" 4 year anniversary gift, it's quite... boring.. which is probably why i don't take this pet out very often.

Pet of the Week - Spirit of Summer
this week's pet is the spirit of summer. when the midsummer fire festival first came out, i picked up the quest a light in dark places but never managed to complete it. i was terrified that i wouldn't get the pet when they announced that the quest would be retired. that is until i found out that the spirit of summer would be sold for blossoms instead!
why i love it
being a night elf myself, it's nostalgic to have a wisp like pet following me around. even if it's red..
plus i admit that i'm guilty of eating a magic eater or two in order to get the same wisp model debuff. :P what can i say? i enjoy having a miniature version of me around.. even if it's for 30 seconds or so heh. (it's even cuter when i use the red ribbon pet leash to link us together ^^; lol.)
what i would change
i'm slightly disappointed that unlike its wisp counterpart, the spirit of summer doesn't have an on click sound. i could definitely add one. maybe slightly altered from the night elf version though, so as to not confuse people :)
other than that, i wouldn't deviate too far from the current model/animation. i'm quite satisfied with my red wisp-like friend just the way he is.

Pet of the Week - Miniwing
miniwing is this week's pet of the week! i remember i did his escort quest with a friend, but it was more on accident that on purpose. we were just power leveling to 70 at the time, and had no idea that at he end of the escort we would be rewarded with a vanity pet. it was quite a pleasant surprise! :D
fun fact: miniwing is the highest item level vanity pet to date! item level 96 puts him at the top even though the pet itself is only level 1.
why i love it
his model may be the same as the bloodsail parrot, but miniwing's coloring is absolutely unique and beautiful. the quest to obtain him wasn't long like other companion pet quest chains, so this pet is fairly easy to get for everyone. not to mention it was a neat surprise for me at the end of the escort :)
his name makes me wonder though, is there a big-wing?
what i would change
being the highest item level companion pet, i would give him attributes that reflect this. more hit points so that he more closely resembles an actual mob? heh, that might be a bit of a stretch though.
one thing that i would definitely give him is his own special bird cry. miniwing deserves to stand out if he's at the top! how else will other birds know who's #1 on the food ladder? i bet miniwing gets dibs on bird feed first :P
